After the robbery of the fire, Prometheus is chained to the Caucasus by the god Hephaistos. Intrigued by the tortured one's misbehaviour, the Okeanids [= the chorus] appear. When their father Okeanos wants to intercede with Zeus, Prometheus haughtily rejects this help, hoping that Zeus' tyranny will soon come to an end. For Prometheus is aware of a secret, with which he hopes to force his redemption from Zeus by blackmail in due course! When the god Hermes comes to convince him to reveal that secret, Prometheus remains stubbornly silent. An enraged Zeus unleashes the elements of nature and buries the proud Prometheus under the rubble of the world.
